A much better solution is to purchase an external hard drive and install Linux on that. This lets you leave your existing hardware and software untouched and simply connect the external drive when you want to use Linux.

The IEEE 1394 High Performance Serial Bus(FireWire)is supported in all current Windows operating systems.Windows provides a bus driver and device drivers for various IEEE1394 OHCI compliant host controllers(e.g.from Texas Instruments/TI,VIA,RICOH or NEC).

Firewire is the common name for the standard known as IEEE1394. Many digital camcorders and computers have a built-in Firewire ports. You can read more general notes about Firewire and see what the ports and cables look like in the Wikipedia entry.

The first program I decided to install was Kino. It seems pretty full featured so far and I am impressed. I wasn't able to pull down video over the 1394 (FireWire) interface (/dev/raw1394) at first though. This was an easy fix.
